Street loses 13 pounds with stomach illness

Closer was unavailable for Tuesday's game vs. Mariners

SEATTLE -- Angels closer Huston Street has spent the last four days battling flu-like symptoms, a condition that caused him to shed 13 pounds and made him unavailable for Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Mariners. Setup man Joe Smith recorded the save by striking out the side in the ninth inning.

Street said postgame that his symptoms have cleared up "for the most part," and Angels manager Mike Scioscia was hopeful that Street would be available by Wednesday's series finale at Safeco Field.

"I've got my appetite back," said Street, who received IV fluids Monday. "I didn't eat Sunday and I didn't eat Monday. I haven't been able to keep any food down, but I didn't want to make a big deal about it because people would want to use that as an excuse and I didn't want to use it as an excuse."

Street would've been unavailable on Monday, regardless, because he pitched four out of five days, and the Angels wanted to give him an extra day on Tuesday as a precaution.

Street said he was throwing up in the bullpen around the sixth inning Sunday. The 32-year-old right-hander was then asked if he could be available in a save situation and said, "Yes, absolutely."

Street wound up surrendering a career-high five runs, all with two outs in a demoralizing loss to the then-first-place Astros.

"I felt fine out there Sunday," Street said. "You've got a lot of adrenaline, it's a big game, it's a big moment. I'm not blaming it on that, by any means whatsoever."
