A's host 17th annual Breast Cancer Awareness Day

OAKLAND -- The A's hosted Breast Cancer Awareness Day at the Coliseum on Sunday afternoon, honoring those who have bravely battled the illness.

Per tradition, more than 350 Bay Area breast cancer survivors formed a human pink ribbon on the field prior to the A's series finale with the Mariners, releasing white doves at the conclusion of the pregame ceremony as a symbol of hope.

The 17th annual event raised funds to support Bay Area cancer patients and their families in the way of research, education, advocacy and free services.

All proceeds from the sale of commemorative items, including hats, pins and pink jerseys, will benefit the American Cancer Society and the Cancer Prevention Institute of California. The A's have raised more than $1.4 million since 1999, including $75,400 on Sunday.

• Josh Reddick, who exited Saturday's game after two innings with an illness, was out of the starting lineup Sunday, though manager Bob Melvin said the right fielder was feeling better.

• Outfielder Sam Fuld, who hasn't appeared in a game since Aug. 30 because of back spasms, took swings in the inside cage Sunday morning and remains on track to be available during a three-game series with the Astros that begins Monday.
