Springer's home run overturned by replay review

HOUSTON -- An overturned call cost Astros outfielder George Springer his second home run of the season Sunday afternoon.

Springer, who slugged his first homer of the year in Saturday's win, shot a 2-2 pitch from Angels reliever Vinnie Pestano down the right-field line with one runner on base in the seventh inning and was initially rewarded with a home run.

The ball cleared the wall right at the base of the right-field foul pole and was initially called fair, though right fielder Kole Calhoun and first baseman Albert Pujols put their hands in the air to signal that it was foul.

A crew-chief review backed up what the replay showed -- the ball curled just outside the foul pole as it descended and was indeed foul. Springer wound up striking out.

"Our information was it was as close as you can get to being fair but not," Astros manager A.J. Hinch said. "Unfortunately, we need the break to go our way, but if the ball is foul, it's foul."
