Astros sign second-round pick Andrew Thurman
Also sign four additional players from 2013 Draft today
HOUSTON, TX - The Houston Astros announced today the signing of right-handed pitcher Andrew Thurman, who was selected in the second round of the 2013 MLB First Year Player Draft. The Astros also announced the signings of LHP Jordan Mills (28th round), RHP Jorge Perez (30th round), 1B Tyler White (33rd round) and LHP J.D. Osborne (36th round). Terms of the contracts were not disclosed. The official announcement was made by Astros Director of Amateur Scouting Mike Elias.
Thurman, 21, worked out with the Astros Major League club at Minute Maid Park this afternoon after signing his professional contract. He will join the Astros minor league affiliate in Tri-City (NY-Penn League) on Tuesday. Thurman was signed by Astros area scout Brad Budzinski .
Thurman posted a 3.23 ERA (36ER/100.1IP) with three complete games in 14 starts for the Anteaters this season. He recorded 91 strikeouts in his 100.1 innings of work, while holding opponents to a .234 batting average. In his career at UCI, Thurman was a two-time All-Big West Conference first-team honoree. He registered a career record of 18-10 on the mound with a 3.19 ERA.
"Andrew is a big addition to the growing stable of pitching prospects in our system," said Elias. "He features a very effective four-pitch mix, reaching the mid-90's with his fastball, and has a durable build and repeatable delivery. The ingredients are present for him to develop into a high-quality Major League starter, and with his long track record of success and advanced feel for pitching, we expect he will hit the ground running this summer."
