Davis takes BP, but quad strain keeps him out

OAKLAND -- A's first baseman Ike Davis, who exited Monday night's series opener against the Red Sox with a left quad strain, was held out of Tuesday's starting lineup but was considered available off the bench.

Rookie Max Muncy drew the start at first base, marking just his third start since being promoted April 25. He entered the day 4-for-14.

Davis participated in batting practice Tuesday, as did Ben Zobrist for the first time since undergoing left knee surgery.

• A's closer Sean Doolittle (left shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment on Thursday with Class A Advanced Stockton.

A.J. Griffin and Eric O'Flaherty are both dealing with minor shoulder soreness, as diagnosed Monday, and were expected to begin playing catch again as soon as Tuesday.

• Right-hander Jarrod Parker, who suffered a bone fracture in his elbow last week while rehabbing from his second Tommy John surgery, will see Dr. James Andrews on Monday, as he continues to assess surgical options.

• The A's released Alex Hassan on Tuesday, four days after designating the Minor League outfielder for assignment.
