Matusz pleased with first game action of spring

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Felix Doubront, the first member of the Red Sox's projected rotation to make a start this spring, fired two strong innings in Sunday's 8-6 victory over the Orioles.

The lefty allowed just one hit, walking none and striking out three.

"Today was pretty simple. I was trying to play with my location, feeling the grip, feeling my pitches first, throwing the first pitch for a strike, feeling comfortable with my mechanics," Doubront said. "I was really focusing and emphasizing my mechanics. I just go out there and tried to do what I was thinking in that moment and tried to get my work done."

Brian Matusz, trying to win a spot in Baltimore's rotation, allowed two hits over two scoreless innings.

"[My stuff] felt pretty good, based off some of the swings on the changeup," said Matusz, who threw 35 pitches, 18 for strikes. "Some swings and misses and a couple outs. Had a few fastballs guys were taking and a few popups. So, giving up two hits that just found a hole, that's the game of baseball."

Mike Napoli ripped a two-run homer to center in the fourth to put Boston in front. Jackie Bradley Jr., who is in competition with Grady Sizemore to be the starting center fielder, had two hits, an RBI and scored a run.

Delmon Young, battling for a roster spot with the Orioles, had hits in his first two at-bats while serving as the DH.

Edward Mujica, projected to be one of Boston's primary setup men this season, made his debut with his new team and fired a perfect third inning.

Up next: Bud Norris will make the start for the Orioles on Monday afternoon in a home game against the Twins, with pitching prospect Kevin Gausman slated to work two innings. Darren O'Day and Tommy Hunter also are scheduled to pitch in the 1:05 p.m. ET game, with the Twins sending Vance Worley to the mound.
