Wieters to see Dr. Andrews for elbow issue

BALTIMORE -- Matt Wieters hasn't had any setbacks in his recovery from a right elbow strain, but he also isn't progressing as quickly as he would have liked, so he will meet with Dr. James Andrews next Monday in Gulf Breeze, Fla.

"It wasn't, per se, scheduled," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said, "but I think it's something that Matt would like to do just to make sure that he agrees with where he is and the way we're proceeding."

Baltimore placed the catcher on the disabled list May 11. He was held out of any action until he began throwing again May 30. The All-Star has gone with an every-other-day approach with regards to his throwing since then.

Wieters threw Monday as scheduled, and Showalter believes Wieters will continue to throw every other day until he meets with Andrews.

"He had one of his better throwing sessions," Showalter said. "He still has some discomfort, nothing like he had. I just think Matt was hoping it would progress a little better at this point.

"What they come out of that appointment with, put it this way, I hope I see him [next] Tuesday."

The O's had originally set July 1 as a target date for Wieters' return, but Showalter said that was set to be sure that if season-ending surgery were required, Wieters would be ready for Opening Day 2015.

"The decision to move rapidly forward into baseball-catching activities has not been made to do that," Showalter said, "so I'm still hoping that we get something accomplished and Dr. Andrews says this is slow, but we continue to work down this path."
