Prospect Bridwell loses no-no in ninth

Right-hander Parker Bridwell, the Orioles' No. 17 prospect, retired the first 16 hitters he faced Tuesday and took a no-hitter into the ninth inning. Though Tony Renda hit a one-out single to break it up, Bridwell and Class A Advanced Frederick defeated Potomac, 7-0.

Bridwell began the game with five perfect innings before issuing a one-out walk in the sixth. Undeterred, he retired the next nine batters in order.

Bridwell issued another one-out walk in the ninth, bringing Renda, the Nationals' No. 20 prospect, to the plate. He lined a single up the middle, ending the no-hitter and Bridwell's night. Right-hander Jesse Beal came on in relief and got the final two outs to complete the combined one-hit shutout.

Bridwell threw 98 pitches in 8 1/3 innings, the longest outing of his career. He struck out a season-high eight batters and walked two.

Before Tuesday, Bridwell had been off to a rough start to the season. He was winless entering the night and had a 6.94 ERA and 1.771 WHIP in seven starts. Thanks to his dominant start, his ERA fell to 5.61 and his WHIP is now 1.499.
