Barney heads to Triple-A to work at short, third

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers optioned infielder Darwin Barney to Triple-A Albuquerque Tuesday and completed their trade with the Cubs by sending Minor League right-handed pitcher Jonathan Martinez to Chicago as the player to be named.

Barney, a Gold Glove second baseman obtained on Tuesday, joins veteran infielder Chone Figgins, who is on a rehab assignment with the Isotopes, to provide infield depth. Justin Turner and Miguel Rojas are the backup infielders with the Dodgers.

The Dodgers will pay $500,000, and the Cubs about $300,000, of the remaining salary owed to Barney from a $2.3 million contract.

The Dodgers' interest in Barney preceded the weekend meltdown by Erisbel Arruebarrena, the $25 million Cuban signing who precipitated a brawl while on injury rehab Albuquerque. Arruebarrena, who has two cameo callups with the Dodgers this year, on Sunday was optioned to Class A Advanced Rancho Cucamonga. Disciplinary action is pending.

Fellow Cuban infielder Alex Guerrero is back playing after having a portion of his ear bitten off by former teammate Miguel Olivo, but for now Guerrero is viewed as an offensive utility man.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said Barney was optioned so he could get playing time at positions other than second base, primarily shortstop and third base. Mattingly deflected a question about Barney's impact on Figgins' future with the club.

"I know we have a plan going forward," he said. "It's nothing I can share with you."

Barney, 28, was designated for assignment by the Cubs. He is hitting .230 in 72 games with the Cubs, with a lifetime average of .244 in five seasons. He won a Gold Glove in 2012.

Martinez, 20, was 7-5 with a 3.47 ERA pitching at Class A Great Lakes.
