Burns dealing with tightness in hamstring

ARLINGTON -- Outfielder Billy Burns was a late scratch from Friday's series-opening lineup against the Rangers because of tightness in his right hamstring and could be out "a couple games," manager Bob Melvin said after his club's 4-0 loss.

"He did it during the last game, got some treatment," Melvin said, "and with the off-day we felt like he could maybe play, but after taking batting practice and running around today, it just wasn't worth the risk."

Sam Fuld, who had not appeared in a game since Aug. 30 because of recurring back spasms, was called on to replace Burns, leading off and starting in center field. He finished 0-for-4.

Fuld's last at-bat had come Aug. 25, and he entered Friday hitting .143 over his previous 32 games.

• Catcher Stephen Vogt, out of commission after taking a foul tip to his groin on Sunday, played catch in Arlington on Friday but has no timetable in mind for further baseball activity.

"We're just going to try to take it one day at a time and see what I can do," Vogt said.

Vogt wants to catch again before season's end but is more likely to return as a DH than behind the plate.

• Right-hander Chris Bassitt (shoulder) is playing catch out to 105 feet and nearing a bullpen session, manager Bob Melvin said. Should Bassitt get through several bullpen sessions pain-free, Melvin would not rule out another start for him this season.
