Lawrie to rest hamstring for at least a few days

After dealing with right leg issues for about a week, infielder left game early Monday

PHILADELPHIA -- Blue Jays infielder Brett Lawrie is expected to miss at least a couple of games because of tightness in his right hamstring.

The injury had been bothering Lawrie for more than a week, but finally got to the point on Monday night where he decided some rest was required. Lawrie was running down the line after hitting a ground ball in the fourth inning of the Blue Jays' 3-0 win over the Phillies before he slowed down and pulled himself from the game.

Lawrie is listed as day to day and will receive treatment on Tuesday, but likely won't make his return to the lineup until at least Thursday vs. the Phillies.

"I've hit a point where I can't keep doing this every single day," Lawrie said. "In every game that I've played in the last little bit, it has been little things that have just grabbed on me -- almost resets it a little bit, and just kind of says, 'This is how it's going to be, it's not better yet.'

"I just can't do it the way that I want to, and to put myself at risk like that. ... I could be out for a month and a half or something. I just don't want to because I want to play. So I'd rather take a couple of days, rather than do something really bad."

The timing of Lawrie's injury is rather unfortunate for the Blue Jays, considering his recent performance at the plate. Lawrie entered play on Monday with multiple hits in seven of his past 10 games and was riding a seven-game hitting streak. Lawrie was hitting .467 (14-for-30) over that seven-game span after starting the year with just four hits in 44 at-bats.

"I've been playing with this the past road trip since Kansas City, and I need to give it a little bit of time. I need to give it a couple of days," Lawrie said. "I tried to play with it, and I can play with it, it's just that I'm not playing the way I would like to play.

"That's from getting out of the hole and stuff like that. It's not terrible, I still have strength in there. The doctor saw me, so there's nothing crazy going on, it just needs a couple of days to settle down."
