Parnell throws BP, expects to be activated Tuesday

NEW YORK -- Mets reliever Bobby Parnell threw his first live batting-practice session Sunday as he works to return from right shoulder tendinitis. Parnell has been sidelined since Aug. 17 and expects to be active when rosters expand Tuesday.

Parnell, who underwent Tommy John surgery in April 2014, owns a 5.59 ERA in 23 appearances for the Mets this season. At the height of his struggles late last month, the Mets gave him a choice between the disabled list, an option to Triple-A Las Vegas or a designation for assignment.

One of the longest-tenured Mets, Parnell will now spend September trying to prove he belongs in the playoff bullpen. The Mets' roster will soon grow more crowded when former D-backs closer Addison Reed arrives via trade.

"I can see how you would look at it that way, but I'm not going to," Parnell said of a looming competition. "The goal is to get the New York Mets into the playoffs, and that's all I'm worried about."

• With David Wright back in the lineup Sunday, the Mets started Juan Uribe at second base for the first time. Aside from one inning earlier this year in Atlanta, Uribe had not played second since 2011.
