Beachy logs solid effort in second spring start

Right-hander goes three scoreless frames; B.J. Upton has pair of hits

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- The Phillies and Braves honored the late Jim Fregosi on Wednesday afternoon before the National League East rivals played each other in a Grapefruit League game at Bright House Field.

Right-hander Brandon Beachy allowed one walk and struck out one in three scoreless innings, while B.J. Upton went 2-for-4 with a double in an eventual 2-2 final after nine innings.

"[I] felt better, more comfortable out there," Beachy said. "Turned it up a little bit more while working on stuff. I was able to make some better pitches than the last time out. ... A lot better than last time out. Not that the results matter, but I felt better."

Both clubs entered the game with 1-6 records. The Phillies broke a 1-1 tie with a run in the seventh before the Braves evened the game in the ninth.

Atlanta scored the game's first run in the fourth when Chris Johnson scored from third on a fielder's choice. The Phillies scored a run to tie the game in the bottom of the inning when Kevin Frandsen singled to center to score Bobby Abreu.

Frandsen's leadoff single led to the go-ahead run in the seventh. He advanced to second on a single from Cameron Rupp, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Reid Brignac and scored on a fielder's choice from Tony Gwynn.

A throwing error by Brad Lincoln led to the tying run in the ninth.

Phillies right-hander Sean O'Sullivan, who is in camp as a non-roster invitee, allowed one walk and struck out two in three scoreless innings.

Up next: The Braves will meet up with the Nationals for the third time this spring on Thursday at Champion Stadium, with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m. ET on Gameday Audio. Right-hander Julio Teheran will take the mound for his second Grapefruit League start. In his first appearance of the spring Saturday, also against the Nationals, Teheran gave up two hits and struck out one batter over two innings of a game Atlanta wound up losing, 16-15.
