Phillips exits game with contusion in quad

CINCINNATI -- Although manager Dusty Baker was thrilled with his team's 6-2 win on Thursday and the series victory over the Cardinals that came with it, his mood was somewhat subdued by the uncertain status of second baseman Brandon Phillips.

With the Cardinals threatening in the top of the sixth, Phillips helped turn a double play to end the inning. In the process, though, he sustained a contusion in his left quad. He remained in the game for the top of the seventh but was replaced by pinch-hitter Cesar Izturis before his scheduled at-bat in the bottom half of the inning.

"We'll know tomorrow," Baker said when asked about Phillips. "I just couldn't take a chance."

Four innings before the double play and subsequent injury, Phillips drove in his 101st run of the season. Since moving to the two-hole on Aug. 28, the 32-year-old All-Star is batting .324, with a .394 on-base percentage to go with two homers and six RBIs, and Baker would like to make sure he has his services down the stretch.

"This is the time of year when you're a little bit fatigued. Injuries usually come when you get fatigued," Baker said. "He stretched out weird on the double play. I pulled both of my quads. It's a bad feeling, and I still suffer for it. The main thing is, we have to wait until we see tomorrow and get good news from the doctor -- no separation, no bleeding. We still want to be cautious, and we'll check it out tomorrow."
