Braves DFA Veal, recall righty reliever Martin

ATLANTA -- Once Donnie Veal squandered a seventh-inning lead in Sunday's comeback victory over the Giants, the Braves determined that it no longer made sense to carry two left-handed relievers.

As expected, the Braves designated Veal for assignment on Monday afternoon. Right-handed reliever Cody Martin has been recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett, and he is expected to be in Atlanta's bullpen for Monday night's series opener in Phoenix against the D-backs.

With Luis Avilan unavailable and the Giants set to send three consecutive left-handed batters to the plate in a one-run game on Sunday, the Braves took a chance on Veal, who promptly allowed Gregor Blanco's game-tying single and Joe Panik's go-ahead home run.

Veal allowed seven earned runs and eight hits, including three home runs, in 4 1/3 innings for Atlanta this year. The 30-year-old southpaw has now been designated for assignment twice within four weeks.

Martin produced a 2.16 ERA and limited opponents to a .220 batting average in the 14 appearances he made for the Braves from April 7-May 6. But he was sent to Gwinnett after allowing five runs and seven hits, including home runs to Giancarlo Stanton and Bryce Harper, in the three innings he worked from May 9-15.
