Brewers prospect Harrison suffers broken ankle
MILWAUKEE -- Brewers No. 3 prospect Monte Harrison will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a tibia fracture and a dislocated fibula of his left ankle running the bases for Rookie-level Helena on Tuesday night.
The Brewers will have a better timeline for Harrison's rehabilitation after he's examined in Milwaukee, assistant general manager Gord Ash said. The current plan, according to Ash, is to allow time for the swelling in Harrison's ankle to subside before he makes that trip.
"Certainly done for this year," Ash wrote in an email, "and until he sees Dr. [William] Raasch, I can't tell you ultimately how long he will be out."
A video from KXLH-TV showed the aftermath of Harrison's gruesome injury, which occurred as he rounded third base in the first inning of a 5-1 win over Orem. Harrison was taken off the field by emergency medical technicians and transported to the hospital, where he later tweeted an upbeat message to fans.
Harrison, a 19-year-old outfielder, was Milwaukee's second-round Draft pick in 2014 and quickly rose to top-prospect status. Rather than leave him in the heat and monotony of extended spring training, the Brewers opted to push Harrison (with another young prospect, shortstop Jake Gatewood) to Class A Wisconsin to begin the season, and were not surprised when he struggled to a .148/.246/.247 slash line.
When Helena opened its season in June, Harrison joined that team and surged to a .299/.410/.474 slash line in his first 28 games, with 14 walks and 14 stolen bases including one of each Tuesday before getting hurt.
Ash also provided an update on right-hander Miguel Diaz, No. 13 on MLB.com's Brewers prospects list. Diaz had a fracture in his right elbow and underwent surgery in the middle of March, but is currently throwing live batting practice and should return to game action this weekend, according to Ash.
