Brewers' 1st-rounder taken off on stretcher, but OK

Brewers first-round Draft pick Trent Clark was said to be sore but otherwise OK early Monday after being removed from the field on a stretcher Sunday night at Maryvale Baseball Park during the first inning of his second professional game.

In an email Monday morning, Brewers assistant GM Gord Ash said Clark suffered only a bad bruise on his forehead when he ran headfirst into a wall trying to catch a fly ball. Ash's report corroborated two sources late Sunday who said it appeared Clark had avoided serious injury. One source said the 18-year-old outfielder had complete movement in his neck, arms and legs, and that emergency medical personnel had been called as a precaution because of sensitivity to head injuries.

"Everything's OK," Ash said.

The Arizona Rookie League game between the Brewers and Angels affiliates was delayed by about 15 minutes while athletic trainers and emergency personnel tended to Clark on the warning track. He was then removed from the playing field on a stretcher and transported for medical care via a Phoenix Fire Department vehicle.

Clark, who started the game as the Brewers' center fielder, was hurt chasing a ball into the right-center-field gap. He nearly came up with the highlight-reel catch, but stumbled at the warning track and crashed into the padded wall.

The 18-year-old from North Richland Hills, Texas, was the 15th overall pick in the Draft, and signed for a $2.7 million signing bonus. Clark signed that contract June 15, one week after the Brewers called his name, and he took batting practice at Miller Park before departing for Phoenix to begin his pro career.

He went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI in his debut on Saturday.
