Bruce beckons for breakfast on new bowl

Jay Bruce was excited to be featured on Sunday's Great American Ball Park giveaway, a cereal bowl and spoon set that was distributed to the first 8,000 kids age 14 and younger.

"The marketing department has done a really great job keeping the promotions interesting; it's a really tough job to stay fresh and stay new," Bruce said. "There are always shirts and backpacks and stuff like that. This is something that is useful, too.

"They were thinking outside of the box -- actually, outside the bowl -- with this one," Bruce joked.

Bruce said he's looking forward to eating his favorite cereals out of his new bowl.

"I love Special K with berries. And if I really want to be bad, I'll go with Fruit Loops, or Cap'n Crunch. It's like eating sugar cubes, though," Bruce lamented.

Will Bruce munch on some VottO's, the recently released Cheerio-like cereal featuring his teammate?

"I don't know -- Joey's got to earn his way into my cereal bowl!"

"I probably will," Bruce continued. "It's funny: It's a perfect match -- he's got the cereal, I've got the bowl. It's a cool giveaway."

The right fielder also had something to say to kids who will be eating their breakfast from his bowl.

"I appreciate that they came to the game, and thanks for being a fan. And maybe one day they will have their own [picture on a] cereal bowl," Bruce said.

Meggie Zahneis, winner of the 2011 Breaking Barriers essay contest, earned the job of youth correspondent for MLB.com in the fall of '11.
