Bochy expects Pence to return on Tuesday

PHILADELPHIA -- Giants manager Bruce Bochy expects the soreness in Hunter Pence's left wrist will subside enough to allow the right fielder to rejoin the lineup for Tuesday's series opener at New York.

"If all goes well," Bochy said Saturday.

Bochy related that Pence, who missed his third game in a row, maintained his physical conditioning, but refrained from swinging a bat. The intent was to ease stress on the wrist, which Pence hurt Monday when he tumbled to the grass after making a running catch of a drive hit by Pittsburgh's Andrew McCutchen.

With Pence sidelined, Gregor Blanco started for the 12th time this season in right field. Nori Aoki, who missed only his third game of the season when he was weakened by the flu Friday, was in left field and the leadoff spot.

• Buster Posey's tiebreaking home run in Friday night's seventh inning was the sixth of his career that put the Giants ahead in the seventh inning or later. That's the most among the Giants since Posey reached the Majors in 2010. Angel Pagan is next on the list with five.

• Left-hander Jeremy Affeldt, who is both the instigator and the source of much clubhouse humor, turned 36 on Saturday. "You can't miss that day, because you'll hear about it the rest of the year," Bochy said dryly. "We have it posted on the wall."
