Call stands after Matheny deploys second challenge

ST. LOUIS -- Manager Mike Matheny used his second challenge of the season on Monday, but he has yet to successfully have a call overturned.

Matheny asked the umpiring crew to turn to the instant replay system after first base umpire D.J. Reyburn called Brewers pitcher Yovani Gallardo safe on a bang-bang play at first base to lead off the sixth. Crew chief Jeff Kellogg put on the headset, and, after a deliberation of under two minutes, relayed that the call would stand.

That meant that after consulting video replays, there was inconclusive evidence to overturn the call. The ruling also cost Matheny his only challenge of the game.

Gallardo was awarded the infield single and moved to third after Cardinals starter Michael Wacha plunked a pair of Milwaukee hitters. Wacha worked out of the bases-loaded jam by striking out Khris Davis to end the inning.
