Correa displays clutch gene in Fenway debut

BOSTON -- There's not much 20-year-old rookie phenom Carlos Correa can do anymore to surprise anyone, especially Astros manager A.J. Hinch and his teammates.

Correa continues to try to push the barrier of remarkable feats, though, and did so again in Friday's 12-8 win over the Red Sox at Fenway Park when he bashed a temporary go-ahead home run in the eighth inning before driving in the game-winning run with an RBI single in the 10th.

"We're witnessing a good player," Hinch said. "This kid is uniquely gifted. He rises to the moment. He loves playing. And he's playing with a real calm heartbeat. We've seen it since Day 1. His debut in Chicago he had a calm heartbeat, so he's just a really talented player who's adjusted quickly to the big leagues, and certainly a big player for us."

Correa, hitting third for a first-place team that's won five in a row, went 3-for-6 to raise his batting average to .300 exactly 100 at-bats into his career. He's hit six homers in only 23 games, including a tape-measure blast off Craig Breslow that sailed high over the Green Monster.

"It was a good one. I got it pretty good," he said. "I figured it was a long inning. He was going to try to come strike one down the middle. I know we have a pretty good bullpen and I knew a new guy was coming in so I just jumped at it. I was aggressive, I was able to put a good swing on it and be able to hit it out of the ballpark."

Little did Correa know his teammates would need more of his heroics. Tied at 8 in the 10th inning, he singled to left field to score Jose Altuve from second base. The Astros went on to score three more times in the inning.

"You never know what can happen," Correa said. "This is a fun game and that's why we love it. I got that single to put us ahead in the game, and we were able to win the game, that's all that matters."

Correa was playing his first game since being named the American League Rookie of the Month for June.

"It's been just great so far to be able to play with this team, great team, great teammates," he said. "It's just been great. We're winning games, we're playing good baseball. We're working hard and we're getting better every single day."

Correa said he and Altuve were talking about hitting a homer over the Green Monster prior to the game. Altuve hit a grand slam over the Green Monster last year.

"It was an unbelievable experience and we got the win so it was a great day," Correa said.
