Gomez day to day with left wrist contusion

CINCINNATI -- Brewers center fielder Carlos Gomez was taken out of the game in Saturday's 7-3 Brewers win with a left wrist contusion after being hit by a Josh Smith pitch in the fifth inning -- the fourth Smith plunking victim of the game.

X-rays came up negative and he is listed as day-to-day.

"He has a left wrist contusion," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. "I don't know [the severity of it], I just don't know. It was bad enough to come out of the game, but it's just a bruise."

Gomez didn't comment on the severity of the injury, but after the game was seen with his wrist taped up.

Gomez was looked at by the Brewers' medical staff after the play and was replaced by pinch-runner Shane Peterson.

The four Brewers plunkings from Smith tied a Reds franchise record for most hit batters in a game. The last Reds pitcher to plunk four batters in a game was Jake Weimer on July 28, 1907 against the New York Giants.

"He was all over the place," Counsell said of Smith.

Gomez was 0-for-2 with a strikeout in his previous two at-bats on Saturday. On Friday he hit his first career grand slam and finished 3-for-5 with five RBIs in the game.
