Gomez, Segura lead Brewers' GIBBY nominees

Center fielder's game-saving catch, shortstop's six-hit night up for awards

Center fielder Carlos Gomez and shortstop Jean Segura electrified Miller Park and thrilled Brewers fans all year long. And now that the season has come and gone, and the MLB awards circuit is in full swing, they are part of the Brewers' contingent that is well represented in nominations for the 2013 Greatness in Baseball Yearly Awards.

Major League Baseball's A-listers will take home 2013 GIBBY trophies -- the ultimate honors of the industry's awards season -- based on votes by media, front-office personnel, MLB alumni, fans at MLB.com and the Society for American Baseball Research.

This year's GIBBY Awards feature nominees in 22 categories. Individual honors will go to the MLB MVP, in addition to the year's best starting pitcher, hitter, closer, setup man, rookie, breakout hitter, breakout pitcher, comeback player, defensive player, manager, executive and postseason performer.

Gomez and Segura are among the honorees, along with a few other plays that put the Brewers in the spotlight this season.

Gomez, a first-time All-Star this year and Gold Glove finalist, is a candidate for best defensive player after leading all Major League outfielders in defensive WAR (4.6) this season. He's up against Manny Machado, Evan Longoria, Shane Victorino, Dustin Pedroia, Jose Iglesias, Andrelton Simmons, Juan Lagares, Brandon Phillips, Yadier Molina, Darwin Barney, Gerardo Parra, Nolan Arenado and Troy Tulowitzki.

GIBBY trophies also will be awarded for the year's top play, storyline, hitting performance, pitching performance, oddity, walk-off, Cut4 topic, regular-season moment and postseason moment, from MLB.com's Must C highlight reels.

Gomez is nominated for top play (his game-ending catch at the wall on a deep drive from Joey Votto on July 8), while Segura is nominated for a pair of efforts. The Brewers' 23-year-old shortstop is up for best hitting performance (his six-hit night against the Twins on May 28, the first such effort in the Majors since 2009) and top oddity, for "stealing first base" April 19 against the Cubs.

The Brewers also are nominated for best walk-off for Logan Schafer's game-winning pinch-hit suicide squeeze bunt against the Cubs on Sept. 17, and best Cut4 topic for the "high-five putout" from Sept. 14, which is shared with the Reds.

In the past five years, fans have cast more than 50 million votes across the various GIBBY categories, none of which was restricted to individual League affiliation. Fan voting runs through Dec. 1.

Winners will be presented their GIBBY trophies at the MLB.com Greatness in Baseball Yearly Awards extravaganza during the Winter Meetings in Orlando, Fla.
