Quentin's delayed start isn't a concern

PEORIA, Ariz. -- Padres manager Bud Black said on Wednesday there was no need to read anything into the fact that outfielder Carlos Quentin hasn't appeared in Cactus League play.

Quentin, who had minor surgery on his right knee two days after the 2012 season in October, has been taking part in all of the team's drills, running without pain and taking a lot of batting practice.

Black said the longer than usual Spring Training schedule, coupled with the fact position players don't need nearly as long as pitchers to get ready, has allowed for a belated start to Quentin's spring, as far as games go.

"It's Feb. 27 and we've got well over a month before we start," Black said. "He's swinging the bat great and doing fine. He and the medical staff are on top of everything they need to be doing."

Quentin's absence has allowed the Padres to give additional playing time to outfielders James Darnell, Jaff Decker, Travis Buck and Kyle Blanks.
