Gillaspie among top performers in Minors on Friday

Rays No. 5 prospect Casey Gillaspie is still raking for Class A Bowling Green.

The 22-year-old launched a homer for the second straight night and has five blasts in his past eight games. His 14 dingers tie him for fourth in the Minors and the 6-foot-4 first baseman has also recorded 10 doubles and 41 RBIs this year.

No. 6 prospect Brent Honeywell did his part on the mound for the Hot Rods, who narrowly fell to Beloit, 4-3. The 20-year-old held the Snappers to two hits, surrendering three runs (one earned) in the process. On the night, Honeywell struck out 11 batters, posting double-digit Ks for the first time in his pro career.

Drafted in the second round last summer, Honeywell is 4-3 with a 2.75 ERA this season.

More standout performances from Top 100 prospects on Friday

• Nationals No. 1 prospect (No. 4 overall) Lucas Giolito gave up eight hits, but was able to minimize the damage and earn a 'W' in Class A Advanced Potomac's 4-1 victory over Frederick. The 20-year-old gave up just one run while striking out five in 6 1/3 innings and stands at 2-4 with a 4.08 ERA this season.

• Blue Jays No. 2 prospect (No. 37 overall) Dalton Pompey launched two homers in Double-A New Hampshire's 14-1 blowout of Altoona, less than a week after he homered in his first appearance for the Fisher Cats. It's only been six games, but Pompey is on a tear, hitting .417/.481/.917 with three round trippers, a double, a triple and seven RBIs. Contrast that with his numbers in the Majors -- .193/.264/.337 with two homers and six RBIs -- and at Triple-A Buffalo this season -- .209/.294/.253 with no homers and six RBIs -- and you can see why the team wanted Pompey to find his bearings at the plate.

• Rangers No. 3 prospect (No. 47 overall) Nomar Mazara can't stop bringing runners home for Double-A Frisco. The outfielder went 3-for-5 with a triple and four RBIs Friday, his third straight multi-RBI game. In the past three games, he's hitting 6-for-11 with two homers and nine RBIs.

• Yankees No. 2 prospect (No. 59 overall) Aaron Judge launched a clutch two-run home run for Double-A Trenton, tying the Thunder up with Harrisburg, 2-2, in the top of the eighth inning. However, the Senators added two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning and came away with a 4-2 win. Judge has nine homers and 36 RBIs this season.

• Astros No. 3 prospect (No. 61 overall) Domingo Santana went 2-for-3 with two walks, a double and four RBIs for Triple-A Fresno. The outfielder's 2015 numbers have ballooned to .310/.439/.583 with 12 doubles, three triples, 11 homers and 36 RBIs.

Other notable performances from around the Minor Leagues

• Astros No. 16 prospect Joe Musgrove is already on his third Minor League stop of the season and he made a positive impression in his Double-A Corpus Christi debut Friday night. The 6-foot-5 right-hander gave up five hits and one run while striking out three in six innings of work for his new team. He's been one of the more consistent hurlers in the Minors this year, going 4-1 with a 0.70 ERA for Class A Quad Cities and 4-0 with a 2.40 ERA for Class A Advanced Lancaster.

• Blue Jays No. 7 prospect Richard Urena homered for the second night in a row. The Class A Lansing shorstop has now hit in five straight games, collecting three homers and eight RBIs over that span. Urena has a .283/.298/.473 line with 10 dingers and 44 RBIs this season.

• Blue Jays No. 24 prospect Chase De Jong put together his best performance of the season for Class A Lansing. The 6-foot-4 right-hander struck out 10 while giving up four hits in seven shutout innings. Friday marked the first time he's hit double-digit Ks in 2015 and he stands at 6-4 with a 3.38 ERA.

• Braves No. 7 prospect Braxton Davidson homered for Class A Rome, notching his first long ball since May 23. The right fielder finished the game 2-for-3 with a walk, three runs and two RBIs. He's hit in eight straight contests.

• Cardinals No. 23 prospect Trey Nielsen collected his second straight win for Class A Advanced Palm Beach. The right-hander gave up five hits and one run while striking out six in seven innings. He's allowed just two earned runs in his past five starts (34 total innings), going 3-1 during that span. On the season, he's 6-4 with a 1.95 ERA.

• Mariners No. 6 prospect Edwin Diaz nabbed his first win in six tries for Double-A Jackson. The right-hander gave up three hits and one run in seven innings of work, striking out seven in the process. Friday was the first time he's held the opposing team to less than two runs since he was promoted on May 16. Diaz sits at 1-4 with a 5.57 ERA.

• Nationals No. 21 prospect Matt Skole homered for the second time in three nights and has 10 RBIs in that span. The Double-A Harrisburg infielder went 2-for-4 with a dinger and four RBIs Friday and has 10 homers and 34 RBIs on the year.

• Padres No. 18 prospect Rafael De Paula scored his first 'W' since May 21 for Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore. The Dominican-born righty hurled six shutout innings, scattering three hits and striking out six in the process. The win evened out his record at 4-4 and his ERA is 4.20.

• Phillies No. 29 prospect Malquin Canelo picked up his third straight multi-hit game for Class A Lakewood. The shortstop finished 2-for-4 with a triple, solo shot and three RBIs. Friday also marked his second straight night with a homer -- he's got four of those this season, along with 17 RBIs.

• Pirates No. 11 prospect Elias Diaz homered for the second time in three games for Triple-A Indianapolis. His three-run shot couldn't quite help the Indians avoid a narrow 8-7 defeat at the hands of Gwinnett, but his recent surge provides a silver lining. The catcher has improved his line from .265/.335/.338 with one homer and 17 RBIs to .282/.345/.397 with three homers and 25 RBIs since June 4.

• Rays No. 19 prospect Richie Shaffer smacked three home runs on Friday night in Triple-A Durham's 11-7 win over Louisville, bringing his season total to 14. That mark is tied for fourth in the Minor Leagues and he's well on his way to topping his 2014 total of 19. Before this season, Shaffer had never registered a multi-homer game, but his promotion to Durham seems to have awoken his power. He homered twice in his Bulls debut on May 24 and squeezed in two more round trippers before Friday's onslaught.

• Reds No. 16 prospect Taylor Sparks is on fire for Class A Advanced Daytona. The third baseman went 2-for-4 with a triple, solo shot and two RBIs Friday, bringing his home run total to four since June 3. He has seven on the year, along with 17 RBIs.

• Red Sox No. 15 prospect Sam Travis was perfect for Class A Advanced Salem, going 4-for-4 with a double and three-run homer. The first baseman has been scorching hot since the beginning of June. His numbers have jumped from .277/.340/.401 to .316/.377/.462 in the past 11 days. "Early in the season, I was kind of trying to do too much," Travis told MiLB.com after his second career four-hit game. "My swing was too big and my timing wasn't there, but the most important thing is I wasn't swinging at good pitches. Once I started simplifying things and swinging at strikes, things started to come around."

• Red Sox No. 16 prospect Javier Guerra doubled up for Class A Greenville, hitting two homers as the Drive defeated Rome, 10-8. The blasts were his sixth and seventh of the season and he has 13 doubles and 30 RBIs to boot.

• White Sox No. 15 prospect Thad Lowry won his third straight for Class A Kannapolis, giving up four hits and one run while striking out five in six innings. The righty has only given up five earned runs over his past three starts (19 total innings) and has yet to issue more walks than strikeouts in a game this year. Lowry currently stands at 7-2 with a 3.66 ERA.

• Yankees No. 5 prospect Robert Refsnyder launched a three-run homer for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, his fourth shot of the season. The second baseman has also recorded 13 doubles and 27 RBIs this year.
