Casilla strains hamstring; good news for Berry

SARASOTA, Fla. -- Alexi Casilla, a non-roster infielder in the Orioles' camp, strained his right hamstring trying to field a ground ball during workouts on Tuesday and was immediately told to shut it down.

"I've had this before," Casilla said in the Orioles' clubhouse. "I don't think it's as bad. If it was a game, I would have been able to stay out there, but since it was a workout, there was no reason to continue. Hopefully, I'll be a lot better tomorrow."

Casilla said he pulled up, feeling the strain as he tried to field a ball to his right.

"I don't know how bad it is yet," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "Cassy has been a real durable guy. Hopefully, it happened early and we caught it. That's pretty smart."

Showalter said he had better news about non-roster outfielder Quintin Berry, who left Monday's workout with a back spasm and underwent an MRI on Monday night. The MRI was negative and showed no apparent damage.

"It looks like we might have dodged it with Berry," Showalter said. "He feels pretty good today in comparison to yesterday. It must have been a spasm, a cramp. He had a pretty good MRI."

Berry, though, didn't work out on Tuesday.

"I think we'll see him shortly," the veteran manager added. "I couldn't believe he walked by me this morning and I was talking to him. Last time I saw him yesterday he wasn't able to bend over."

Showalter also said that a pair of intrasquad games scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday might both be played on the main field at Ed Smith Stadium because of soggy conditions on the practice fields.

The Orioles are slated to open their Grapefruit League season on Friday against the Rays in Port Charlotte, Fla. Their first home game is Saturday against the Blue Jays. Both games are scheduled for 1:05 p.m. ET.
