Chapman's hotel room robbed in Pittsburgh

Police in Pittsburgh are investigating a robbery that occurred in the hotel room of Reds reliever Aroldis Chapman, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.

The robbery occurred Tuesday night during the Reds-Pirates game, meaning Chapman was not present at the time of the robbery.

A pair of guests at the Omni William Penn Hotel told security guards that they heard a woman screaming for help, and when officers were sent to the hotel room at around 10 p.m., they found a 26-year-old woman tied up and crying.

Police spokeswoman Diane Richard didn't identify the woman, but in a news release she said the woman was "the hotel guest of a male who attended the Pirates baseball game and who was not present at the time of the incident. During this incident, the male guest had various items taken and was later interviewed by detectives."

The Reds, who finish their series in Pittsburgh on Wednesday night, issued a statement:

"We are aware of the hotel room robbery of one of our players and are working with local law enforcement agencies. Because it is an active police investigation, we have no other comment at this time."

Police said the woman answered the door when a man knocked claiming to be with the maintenance department, but upon his entry, he demanded various items in the room. The woman allegedly refused, leading to her being tied up.

Bob Page, the director of marketing for the hotel, said police don't believe the intruder was a maintenance worker.

Richard wrote in the news release that the guests who discovered the woman were staying on the same floor and saw the woman in an open room with her hands bound by cloth napkins. They alerted hotel security.
