Skulina, Dorris combine for Class A no-hitter

Right-hander Tyler Skulina, the Cubs' No. 18 prospect, threw 7 1/3 hitless innings for Class A Kane County and combined with reliever Nathan Dorris to throw a no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the Quad Cities River Bandits on Saturday.

Skulina, selected in the fourth round of the 2013 Draft, walked two and hit a batter while striking out five. He improved to 2-1 with a 3.19 ERA in eight starts this season.

The 22-year-old Skulina has held opponents to a .193 average in 42 1/3 innings this year, but he had completed six innings only once this season before Saturday night's dominant outing.

He struggled in a brief stint with Kane County last season, posting a 9.31 ERA with six walks and nine strikeouts in 9 2/3 innings over four starts. But Skulina showed Saturday what he's capable of when everything is working right, pitching deep into the game and keeping opposing hitters off the bases.

Dorris, 23, picked up his save with 1 2/3 perfect innings. Overall this season, the left-hander has gone 4-2 with a 2.49 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 21 2/3 innings over 13 appearances.
