Chipper to shave head for cancer fundraiser

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Chipper Jones understands that Father Time has already robbed him of some of the hair he had during his younger days. But he has willingly committed to lose more in an effort to aid cancer-stricken children.

Jones is among a group of current and former professional baseball players who will shave their heads to help raise funds for Pediatric Cancer Foundation (PCF) on Wednesday. The former Braves third baseman was introduced to this initiative by his agent, BB Abbott, who is a PCF board member.

"I'm a little scared to see how much my hair line has receded," Jones said. "But it's well worth it, because this is a great cause. We're going to raise at least $50,000 by the end of the week."

While Yankees catcher Brian McCann will not participate because his head is already shaved, he will be present at Abbott's Tampa, Fla.-area home to see Jones and the other players lose their hair. Jones has promised his Twitter followers that he will post pictures. But instead of going completely bald, he is leaning toward putting a No. 1 guard on the sheers.

Abbott has coordinated this event in conjunction with a fundraising campaign where more than 200 men, women, and children are going bald to raise funds and awareness for select nonprofit organizations.

Other players scheduled to participate on Wednesday include Tommy Joseph and Ethan Martin (Phillies); Todd Redmond (Blue Jays); Brian Johnson (Red Sox); Jonathan Crawford and Robbie Ray (Tigers) and retired Tiger Mike Rabelo.
