Archer wins AL Player of the Week honor

Rays pitcher Chris Archer has been named American League Player of the Week after going 2-0 with a 0.60 ERA in two starts.

The 26-year-old right-hander recorded 26 strikeouts in 15 innings en route to claiming his first career weekly honor and the first for a Tampa Bay player since Alex Cobb in September 2013.

Archer led the Majors in strikeouts, was tied for first in wins and innings pitched, and tied for second in ERA. He held opponents to a .214 batting average and did not walk a batter.

Archer needed 105 pitches and just eight innings to tie the club record for strikeouts in a game (15) on Tuesday against the Angels. It also set a new franchise mark for strikeouts in a road game, and he became the second pitcher since 2000 (the Mariners' Felix Hernandez is the other, on June 8, 2014) to strike out 15 batters with 105 or fewer pitches.

Archer followed that performance Sunday by winning his seventh decision of the year and becoming the first pitcher in modern Major League history to log three straight starts with 10-plus strikeouts and no walks. His 38 strikeouts in that span are the most in a three-stretch start without a walk.

Archer leads the Majors in strikeouts (108) and owns the third-lowest ERA (1.84).
