Lake Elsinore's Asencio among May award winners

LOS ANGELES -- The Padres on Wednesday announced their Minor League players of the month for May, as selected by the player development staff.

Class A Lake Elsinore outfielder Yeison Asencio was named Hitter of the Month after batting .320 in 28 games for the Storm in May. He had 11 extra-base hits and 25 RBIs to go with a .400 slugging percentage. Asencio also played errorless defense in right field. For the season, he's hitting .292 with 45 RBIs, the most in the organization.

Double-A San Antonio reliever Kevin Quackenbush was named Pitcher of the Month after not allowing an earned run over 14 games and 13 1/3 innings. He was 1-0 with seven saves in eight opportunities while allowing one unearned run. He has 10 saves in 11 opportunities and a a 0.35 ERA for the Missions.

Lake Elsinore outfielder Travis Jankowski was named Baserunner of the Month after stealing 18 bases in 19 attempts. He currently leads the organization with 36 steals in 39 attempts and is hitting .270.

Class A Fort Wayne outfielder Alberth Martinez was selected as Defensive Player of the Month after making one error in 27 games with 63 putouts and five assists in 69 total chances. He has a .975 fielding percentage. He has three errors in 122 totals chances with 112 putouts and seven assists on the season.

Also Wednesday, five members of the Fort Wayne TinCaps were named to the Midwest League All-Star game -- designated hitter Jeremy Baltz, catcher Dane Phillips, pitchers Roman Madrid, Joe Ross and first baseman Luis Tejada.
