Indians re-sign Capps to Minor League deal

The Indians re-signed former All-Star closer Matt Capps to a Minor League contract on Thursday, giving the veteran right-hander another chance after he missed most of the 2013 season with a shoulder injury. The 30-year-old will be a non-roster invitee to Cleveland's Major League camp during Spring Training.

Capps originally signed with the Indians last winter but started the season at Triple-A Columbus, where he made six appearances and gave up one run over seven innings. His last appearance came on April 20, and he underwent season-ending right shoulder surgery on June 5.

Capps has pitched for the Pirates, Nationals and Twins over eight big league seasons, posting a 3.52 ERA, striking out 6.5 batters per nine innings and racking up 138 saves. He was an All-Star in 2010, when he saved 42 games for Pittsburgh and Washington.

Capps' last Major League action came in 2012 for Minnesota. He appeared in 30 games, going 1-4 with a 3.68 ERA and 14 saves in 15 chances before missing most of the second half with shoulder inflammation.
