Anderson exits with bruised left index finger

SAN FRANCISCO -- Rockies pitcher Brett Anderson left Saturday afternoon's 1-0 victory over the Giants with a left index finger contusion (bruise), which he suffered batting against the Giants' Matt Cain during the top of the fourth inning.

Anderson hopes to make his next start -- on Thursday at San Diego -- but that won't be certain at least until the Rockies re-evaluate him on Sunday.

Anderson, who came to the Rockies in a trade from the Athletics this offseason, was upset that the injury forced him off the mound on a day his pitch action was gaining the sharpness he expected. He struck out two, gave up a hit and walked one.

"That's the most frustrating part for me," he said. "I feel like I was in a rhythm and I was getting some ground balls and getting some swings and misses. The velocity stuff still wasn't what I was used to, but my stuff was sharper and I got some swings and misses with my breaking ball, which is always a good sign."

However, Anderson commended the relief staff. Five pitchers combined for six scoreless innings.

"You never want to put your bullpen in that situation, but they thrived on it today," Anderson said. "Hopefully that doesn't hurt us going forward."

Anderson's only walk was to Cain in the third inning. He wishes Cain had lost command when he was at the plate.

"I put him on base, and he couldn't give me a cookie so I could pop one up or something?" Anderson said.

"So it was my fault?" Cain said of Anderson's injury. "No, that definitely stinks. You don't want to see a guy go down from something like that."

Anderson attempted a warmup pitch at the start of the fourth inning, but he said the swelling made it like "throwing wearing a foam finger." He was able to flex his finger later.
