Spangenberg day to day with bone contusion

SAN DIEGO -- After leaving Saturday night's game in the fourth inning, suffering what was originally diagnosed as a left-knee sprain, second baseman Cory Spangenberg received positive results from the MRI he took after the Padres' 7-2 win against the D-backs.

"No torn ligaments or anything like that, just a bone contusion," Spangenberg said. "So that was good news. We're just going to go day to day and see how it feels for right now."

Spangenberg said the protocol for treatment is icing and resting. Yangervis Solarte started at second base in Sunday's game, the final of the three-game home series.

Interim manager Pat Murphy said that Spangenberg was a lot more sore Sunday than he thought he would be.

"I think within 24 hours we'll know if it's going to settle down," Murphy said. "We are going to wait for it to settle down a little bit before we make a decision on the length of the injury and if there is a possibility to call somebody up."

In Saturday's game, Spangenberg had a one-out double in the fourth inning on a ball into the left-field corner. Murphy and trainer Paul Navarro spoke with him briefly at second base.

Spangenberg then advanced to third base on a wild pitch. But he was replaced by pinch-runner Clint Barmes, who remained in the game at shortstop with Alexi Amarista moving from shortstop to second base.

"I honestly think that's the first time I have ever been pulled out of a game early, so that's not something I like to do, that's not something I want to do," Spangenberg said. "But I guess Murph made that decision and he thought it was the best for the team."

Spangenberg actually aggravated his knee in the top of the first inning when he came up slow after D-backs leadoff hitter Nick Ahmed slid into him at second base trying to break up an inning-ending double play.

"I tried to get up and my knee sort of gave out," Spangenberg said. "I knew something wasn't the same, so I was just hoping it wasn't too bad."

The injury comes at a rough time for the 24-year-old, who played a vital role in Friday's 4-2 win against the D-backs. He had three hits, scored two runs and stole two bases.

"I just started swinging the bat good again and I was feeling good at the plate," Spangenberg said. "So this is definitely not the best time to be hurt."
