Cubs conclude 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft

The Chicago Cubs today completed the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. The club made 42 selections during the three-day event.

The Cubs selected two Illinois athletes today - left-handed pitcher Nathan Dorris in the 17th round (524th overall) out of Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, and catcher Blake Hickman from Simeon Career Academy in Chicago in the 20th round (614th).

Chicago selected third baseman Rustin Sveum, son of Cubs manager Dale Sveum, in the 39th round (1,184th) out of Desert Mountain High School in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Overall, the Cubs selected 22 pitchers (18 righthanders and four lefthanders), seven infielders, eight outfielders and five catchers. Additionally, the Cubs selected 20 college players, seven junior college players and 15 high school players.
