D-backs make most of consecutive rainouts

DENVER -- The D-backs players found different ways to remain occupied during Monday night's two-hour rain delay that resulted in a postponement at Coors Field, and they were thankful that Tuesday's game was called before the game started.

That's because baseball players hate just sitting around.

"It's the worst," veteran second baseman Aaron Hill said.

Some read, others watched the televisions in the clubhouse and there were card games going on as well.

"You try to get a sense for when you're going to play," Hill said. "Because you don't want to do nothing and then all of a sudden someone comes in and says you're starting in 30 minutes Guys try to stay loose. You go out and check out the weather, and when anyone new comes in the door, you ask, 'Still raining outside?'"

One of the creative ways the D-backs found to remain occupied was "Bottlecap Baseball," with veteran infielder Cliff Pennington as the ring leader.

The players took the caps off a water bottle and used a toy bat to play it in the runway between the visiting dugout and clubhouse.

"We've been playing it even without rain delays," Pennington said. "But obviously during a rain delay, it's perfect. It started over when I was in Oakland. I think it was some of the pitchers were just messing around trying to flick them at each other, and it just kind of grew to where we were playing games with it."
