Darvish to stay in turn for now

SEATTLE -- The Rangers have decided to give pitcher Yu Darvish an extra day of rest. With the off-day on Thursday, the Rangers had the option of having him pitch on his normal four days' rest and start on Monday against the Athletics. Instead he will still pitch Tuesday.

Darvish threw 117 pitches in a 6-0 victory over the Marlins on Wednesday. He ended up going nine innings for his first complete game in the Major Leagues.

Manager Ron Washington said the Rangers may push up Darvish after Tuesday's start. The Rangers are off next Thursday as well and Darvish may pitch on four days' rest so he can face the Angels on Sunday night in Anaheim.

"It just depends on his workload," Washington said.

Darvish has become more economical with his pitches. He is averaging 15.1 pitches per inning this season, down from 16.5 in each of the past two years.

"He has held up well," Washington said. "He really hasn't exerted himself. I don't think he exerted himself the other night. Except for the first few innings, I thought he breezed."
