Wright in ASG top 5, but Mets need fan help

NEW YORK -- Though closer Jeurys Familia is all but an All-Star lock at this point, the Mets' position players continue to struggle in fan voting. Neither Lucas Duda nor Wilmer Flores ranks in the top five at first base or shortstop, respectively, in the latest 2015 Esurance MLB All-Star Game Ballot tally, released on Tuesday by Major League Baseball. Only ever-popular third baseman David Wright, who has played only eight games this season and is unlikely to return before the All-Star break, cracked the top five at his position.

Though Duda is having a fine season at first base, he trails voting leader Paul Goldschmidt of the D-backs by more than 2 million votes. Strong years from Adrian Gonzalez and Anthony Rizzo, among others, also make Duda unlikely to crack the roster as a reserve.

It's also clear that Flores will not make the team as a starter, given the more than 3 million votes that separate him and St. Louis' Jhonny Peralta. But Flores' league-leading 10 home runs by a shortstop, not to mention three walk-off plate appearances and counting, could put him on NL manager Bruce Bochy's radar for a bench spot.

The Mets' most promising All-Star candidates are on the pitching staff, most notably Familia and Jacob deGrom. Though Familia blew a save on Monday night, his 1.39 ERA makes him one of the game's elite ninth-inning relievers. DeGrom, meanwhile, has enjoyed one of the best runs in baseball over his active four-game winning streak, posting a 1.25 ERA with 53 strikeouts in 43 1/3 innings. Fans do not vote for All-Star pitchers.
