Tigers groundskeeper injured securing tarp

DETROIT -- A brutal thunderstorm with high winds ripped through Comerica Park after three innings of the series opener between the Tigers and Giants on Friday night.

In a frantic rush to get the tarp secured on the field, Comerica Park head groundskeeper Heather Nabozny injured her right knee.

Nabozny appeared to slip, either on the tarp or the outfield grass. She was assisted off the field by Tigers trainers Matt Rankin and Chris McDonald. Nabozny did not appear able to put any weight on the leg.

Nabozny has been in the role with the Tigers since 1999, when she became the first female head groundskeeper in Major League history.

The National Weather Service predicted wind gusts of up to 70 mph accompanying the storm.
