Scully responds to street suggestion with own
Dodgers HOF broadcaster prefers O'Malleys to be honored in that fashion
SAN FRANCISCO -- Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti's suggestion that a street should be named after Dodgers Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully hasn't been endorsed by Scully.
In fact, Scully offered an alternative.
"The mayor of Los Angeles has a great deal more important things to do than name a street after me," Scully said Sunday. "And if he is considering that idea, better the street should be named after Walter or Peter O'Malley than myself."
Walter O'Malley, as owner of the Dodgers, brought the club to Los Angeles from Brooklyn in 1958. Peter O'Malley, Walter's son, ran the club from 1970-98, when he and his sister sold it to News Corp.
Garcetti said on ABC7's "Eyewitness Newsmakers" program Sunday that he initially saw the idea of honoring Scully with a street on Twitter and that he wanted to take it up with city councilmembers.
Scully has been the broadcasting voice of the Dodgers since 1950 and recently announced he would return to call the games for the 2014 season.
