Mattingly ejected for arguing crucial call

LOS ANGELES -- Dodgers manager Don Mattingly was ejected from Wednesday night's 3-0 loss to the Yankees in the top of the ninth inning by third-base umpire Bill Miller for arguing a check swing.

Mattingly said something to Miller on his way back to the dugout after making a pitching change with two outs and the Dodgers trailing, 3-0, and was ejected.

Earlier in the inning, Miller determined Yankees pinch-hitter Lyle Overbay checked his swing on an 0-2 pitch with two outs and the score still 0-0. Overbay singled to center on the next pitch from reliever Paco Rodriguez, scoring Robinson Cano.

Overbay also tried to check his swing on an 0-1 pitch, though Miller called it a strike.

"I figured either he missed one or he missed two," Mattingly said. "They were both the same swing. Beli [Ronald Belisario] gets a loss, and they travel on."

Dodgers catcher A.J. Ellis agreed with his manager.

"The two check swings seemed very similar to me," Ellis said. "Obviously the third-base umpire saw something different on the second check swing that he didn't see on the first. From my perspective, they were very similar. I was expecting fully to get the third strike call. But unfortunately we didn't get the call. They made us pay on the next pitch."

It was Mattingly's second ejection of the season. His first came June 1 in Colorado. He's been ejected 10 times during his career as a manager.
