Mattingly loses challenge during Reds' rally

LOS ANGELES -- Dodgers manager Don Mattingly challenged a call at first base with his club trailing by one run in the seventh inning on Wednesday evening, but the official at the Replay Command Center at MLB.com headquarters in New York ruled that Gerry Davis' call would stand.

The review lasted two minutes and two seconds.

With the Reds ahead, 3-2, and Brayan Pena on first, Zack Cozart hit what could have been a double-play grounder. Dodgers shortstop Hanley Ramirez fired to second baseman Dee Gordon to force Pena at second, but Davis ruled that the Cozart beat the relay throw.

Looking for any opening to nip a potential Reds rally, Mattingly quickly jogged out and challenged, to no avail.

Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw followed the challenge in short order by striking out Homer Bailey for the second out of the seventh before Billy Hamilton laced a double down the left-field line, moving Cozart to third, threatening to extend Cincinnati's lead.

But Kershaw was able to induce a bouncer to third from Todd Frazier, ending the threat.
