Puig's rehab stopped after setback

LOS ANGELES -- An MRI exam of Yasiel Puig's left hamstring confirmed a setback in the healing process, and his rehab assignment has been stopped, manager Don Mattingly said Tuesday.

"I don't know about it starting all the way over," Mattingly said. "It wasn't necessarily good news, but I don't feel we're starting all the way over. The MRI shows a strain and we know there is one."

Puig has been troubled by the left hamstring since April 13. He missed four of the next five games, then went on the disabled list April 26. He was eligible to be activated Sunday, but reinjured the leg playing for Class A Advanced Rancho Cucamonga on Friday night.

Mattingly suggested that players in general "get caught in the timetable and think that's the timetable they have to be ready. Guys always think they can play through stuff. But the reason he goes on the disabled list in the first place is to get healthy."

Mattingly said the contributions of Monday night walk-off hero Scott Van Slyke, Andre Ethier playing "like the Andre of old" while getting the bulk of time in right field, and the offense from rookies Joc Pederson and Alex Guerrero have allowed the Dodgers to remain in first place despite disabling injuries to Puig and Carl Crawford, as well as starting pitchers Hyun-Jin Ryu and Brandon McCarthy.

The Dodgers are 6-5 in Puig's 11 starts and 15-5 without him in the lineup.
