Dodgers promote Huff in advance of twin bill

DENVER -- With an eye on Tuesday's doubleheader, the Dodgers promoted left-handed swingman David Huff from Triple-A Oklahoma City and optioned right-handed reliever Matt West, one day after he was promoted.

To make room for Huff on the 40-man roster, outfielder Carl Crawford (oblique) was moved to the 60-day disabled list. That means Crawford will be out at least four more weeks.

Manager Don Mattingly still hadn't named a starting pitcher for Game 1 of Tuesday's day/night doubleheader, but he did rule out Zach Lee when he said it would be somebody who has started a Major League game.

Mattingly would only go so far as to say that Monday night's game "would determine" who would start the early game on Tuesday, with Zack Greinke starting the nightcap. A 26th man is allowed to be added for doubleheaders.

Mattingly didn't rule out starting Huff, who allowed four runs in four innings to Seattle in his only start for the Dodgers on April 14. Huff is 2-0 with a 2.35 ERA in two starts and four relief appearances at Triple-A. Nor did Mattingly rule out a bullpen game, which could make right-handed reliever Juan Nicasio a candidate. Nicasio was a starter for the Rockies until late last season.

Huff was promoted because the Dodgers want to neutralize Colorado's left-handed hitters, particularly Carlos Gonzalez. Huff restores the count of bullpen lefties to three, joining Adam Liberatore and J.P. Howell, after Paco Rodriguez was placed on the disabled list with an elbow injury. Mattingly said he did not have a medical update on Rodriguez.

The Dodgers on Monday also sold Minor League right-hander PJ Walters to Washington.
