Prospect Windle beats Appel in Class A victory

Left-hander Tom Windle, the Dodgers' No. 7 prospect, threw seven scoreless innings Thursday to outpitch Astros No. 2 prospect Mark Appel and lead Class A Advanced Rancho Cucamonga to a 4-2 victory at Lancaster.

Windle was selected 55 picks after Appel in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, but he got the better of the No. 1 overall pick for at least one night. He held Lancaster to three hits and one walk in seven innings and struck out four batters.

Thursday marked the second time this season Windle has thrown seven scoreless innings. He also did so May 2 in a victory at Stockton.

With his latest win, Windle improved to 5-4 with a 3.93 ERA. He has struck out 55 batters and walked 21 in 60 2/3 innings in his first full professional season.

Appel, however, continued his rough season. He gave up four runs on six hits and one walk in three innings. With the loss, he falls to 0-2 with an 11.94 ERA in six starts.
