Following some non-verbal communication between Mattingly and first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, as well as Gonzalez visiting pitcher Brandon League to give the Dodgers time to check their own replays, Mattingly issued a challenge. And following a short check with New York, the replay official sent word back that Barnes was out.
It was not a pivotal play at the time, being that the Rockies led, 6-1, but it kept the Colorado leadoff man off base, and it was Mattingly's second successful trip to first base in two days. Both, coincidentally, involved Barnes.
In the third inning Saturday, Dodgers lefty Paul Maholm threw over to first following a Barnes single. The Colorado outfielder initially was called safe, but his foot appeared to come up just short of the bag on his step back following the pickoff throw. Replays confirmed Mattingly's challenge, and the call was overturned.
