Puig gets X-rays after hurting thumb on slide

LOS ANGELES -- Yasiel Puig, returned to the lineup after Friday's benching for arriving late, injured his left thumb in the third inning Saturday, but played the entire game. Afterward, he said he was awaiting results of X-rays.

Puig didn't deploy all of the landing gear on a head-first crash-landing to end an infield single in the third inning. He was later picked off by Giants starter Madison Bumgarner.

Puig had the thumb taped between innings and returned to finish the game, flying out twice in the later innings. After the game, it was neither taped nor splinted.

"I felt OK to play nine innings, that's what I wanted to do," Puig said. "I got treatment today and we'll see the results and how I feel and they'll check to see if I can play [Sunday]."

Manager Don Mattingly said Puig "hit the base good over there and he's a little sore. He told Stan [Conte, director of medical services] and got it taped and was good to go. We'll see what happens tomorrow."

Puig made a similar hard landing at first base last year and wrenched his left wrist, which he usually protects with a brace once he's on base.
