Donald Lutz Becomes First German American Major Leaguer

Die Zinzinnati Roten Beinen riefen einen Deutschen heute auf, um in Major Leagues zu spielen. Wunderbar! (Full disclosure: I used Google translator for most of these words so it might not really make sense but you get the idea).

Donald Lutz became the first German American in The Show when the Reds called him up for the series against the Cardinals that starts tonight. Lutz has played first base and left field in the minors and got the call after the Reds put LF Chris Heisey on the 15-day DL (the SEVENTH Red to be put on the DL already this season, by the way).

Lutz was actually born in America but his family moved to Germany when he was still a baby. He grew up there and played for the German national baseball team (which reminds me I need a German national baseball team jersey right now immediately).

This is particularly significant to me because I’m a very German man myself, ancestor-wise, Wietmarschen is a very German name and Cincinnati is a very German city. The annual Cincinnati Oktoberfest is the second largest Oktoberfest in the world next to Munich and we drink a lot of beer and eat a lot of sausage.

As a tribute to Lutz for his very big accomplishment, here are five German things that I’d like to do with him if we became good German friends.

1. Eat all of the sausage
2. Drink all of the Lager
3. Raise children to be very disciplined
4. Suppress our emotions
5. Keep our apartments very tidy
