Dunning recalled to be long man in bullpen

PITTSBURGH -- Right-hander Jake Dunning joined the Giants on Monday, taking Matt Cain's spot on the roster after Cain was placed on the disabled list. Dunning, 25, has a 2.51 ERA in 14 1/3 innings with Triple-A Fresno, spanning one start and seven relief appearances.

"I just try to keep the same process," Dunning said. "Just keep the ball down, results are going to take care of themselves. I'm not too caught up in the numbers situation. I'm just trying to get guys out and execute pitches out there."

When Dunning was recalled last year it was in Pittsburgh, and he is happy to be back with the Giants.

"This is definitely the place to be," Dunning said. "It's a great feeling being here, and these guys in this clubhouse are amazing guys."

Dunning fit the Giants' needs at this time.

"He did start," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "That just increases his value and flexibility, and that was something we needed today, was somebody who could give us innings, a long guy. He's been throwing three-plus innings and so he's the perfect guy to replace Yusmeiro Petit, because that was his role."
