Hosmer raised the right way, continues to give back

Eric Hosmer, 1B, Royals
Hometown: South Miami

Instead of a family line stocked with athletes, Hosmer was born the son of a firefighter and a nurse.

Mike Sr. and Ileana raised Hosmer in South Florida, where he became a star first baseman for American Heritage High School. He excelled to the point where the Royals used the third overall pick of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft on him.

Hosmer, now a staple in Kansas City's lineup and future, gives back to the community and honors his father's profession. He recently hosted a charity event called "Uncork For a Cause," which benefited the Greater Kansas City Firefighters Local 42 Community Assistance organization.

Hosmer was a high school classmate of Adrian Nieto, the White Sox catcher who went in the fifth round of the 2008 Draft.
